EV Registrations Rise to 72,737

Net Registrations Rise to 73,156 As Of January 1, 2026

The image at the top of the post is the trend of EV registrations since 2014 when we first began tracking them.

The current number breaks down as 47,441 battery electric vehicles (BEVs), 25,416 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), 3 Fuel-Cell, 295 eMC (electric motorcycle.)

It represents an additional 5500 vehicles since July 1, 2025. BEVs continue to strongly outpace PHEVs. The additive numbers for the past 6 months are 4300 BEVs and 1221 PHEVs. The count of e-motorcycles actually declined from 317 to 296.

Net Registrations

These numbers, sourced from the DMV, and published by DEEP. It is a snapshot at a point in time. It includes purchases of new vehicles, used vehicles, vehicles already owned, and vehicles already owned by someone moving into the state. It is netted for those vehicles that have been disposed of (no longer registered in the state) and EV owners who moved away. This is not the same thing as vehicle sales. The vehicle sales data frequently quoted in the press from sources like Cox Automotive are sales of new vehicles only, and generally only BEVs. For some reason, PHEVs are often lumped in with mild hybrids.

Slowdown in EV Adoption

As expected with the cessation of the Inflation Reduction Act incentives for both new and used EVs, the adoption rate slowed. The chart below shows year over year percentage increases in registered EVs since 2019.
