EV Registration Count Update for January 2025

Registered EV Count Hits 60,489

This number is as of January 1, 2025 and represents an increase of 36.5% over the 44,313 that were registered as of one year ago.

There were 23,977 registrations during 2024.

These are the counts by drivetrain. Battery electric vehicles still dominate, followed by plug-in hybrids, electric motorcycles, and fuel cell vehicles.

The state has not met its interim EV registration goal of 150,000 by 2025. If the year over year increase is maintained at roughly this pace, it is possible the 2030 goal of 500,000 by 2030 could be met. As can be seen in the chart, which plots possible future registrations based on an average compound annual growth rate, the curve gets pretty steep as the base increases. This is based on meeting the goal by Dec 31, 2030.

As a reminder, these figures are net registrations, not sales.

The granular details are not available as yet. More to come.

  1. What explains the discrepancy between the 60,489 total and 44,313 (a year ago) + 23,977 (registrations in 2024) = 68,290?
